Dental Crowns in Humble TX

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is used to cover up or “cap” a damaged tooth in order to restore its size, shape, strength, alignment, and to improve its appearance. Dental crowns are cemented into place and will fully encapsulate the portion of the tooth that lies above the gum line.

Aside from being placed over a damaged tooth, dental crowns are also placed on top of dental implants in order to give them the shape and structure of a tooth so that it functions the same as the tooth that was once in that spot.

Porcelain or ceramic crowns are the most common type used today because they can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.

Other types of crowns include metal alloys and gold. Alloy crowns are much stronger than porcelain, which is why they are often used for back teeth. To achieve both strength and aesthetic, porcelain is bonded to a metal shell to create a crown that’s not only strong but also looks natural and attractive.

Reasons For Using Dental Crowns

A dental crown can be used for the following reasons:

  1. To fix and restore a broken tooth or one that has been severely worn down
  2. To cover up and improve the appearance of a discolored tooth
  3. To protect weak teeth such as those that have had numerous areas of decay to prevent them from breaking apart or to hold together the parts of a cracked tooth
  4. To keep a dental bridge in place
  5. To cover up dental implants
  6. For cosmetic modifications – front teeth can be made larger or smaller
  7. To cover up a poorly shaped tooth
  8. To cover teeth that had root canal treatments

Dental crown installations usually take two separate visits to the dental office. The first appointment involves the dentist assessing the tooth to make sure that it can properly support a crown. Then and impression is made of your current tooth to use for making your temporary and your new permanent crown. The tooth is then filed down to prepare it to take the crown. A temporary crown will be made and placed over your tooth to protect it until the final crown is ready.  Learn more about crowns by watching this short video:

After the crown is made, on your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the final one is positioned and permanently fastened onto your tooth using a special adhesive.

If you have ever met anyone that works in a dental lab that makes crowns, you will find that they often have nicknames for some of the dentist around town. Filling and preparing a tooth for a crown is one of the areas of dental practice that requires an “artist” touch. You’ll be glad to learn that Dr. Gregory and Dr. Goel have that artist touch and are not among one of the several dentist in Humble, Kingwood and Atascocita that are known in the labs as “The Butcher,” “The Hacker,” or “Fumble Fingers.”  🙂
